Soon after I began to keep a dream journal in 1982 it became obvious to me that words are not enough to give a good impression of what I had experienced during the dream. I began to sketch and paint directly into the journal but the result was not very satisfying because I was absolutely not skilled. I tried to improve that by going to sketch and drawing classes.

The pictures below are taken from Dream Journal V which covered the time from June 86 to October 87 where my skill was a bit better. In that time I used pencil and water colour. I had no artistic intention, the pictures should only fulfill a documentary function. In that time I was not a good dream recaller and drawing and painting dream scenes had always the effect on me that I could remember my dreams considerable better for some time.

1. This picture, which was painted in 1987 is from an impressing dream series I had in childhood. The dream series had the following succession:

a) I was at the lake of Zurich. As soon as I approached the shore I was frightened to wake up the giant who was sleeping in the reed. Many times he woke up indeed and got up by spraying a lot of water around him. I tried to escape and woke up. (Probably in the age between 5 and 7.)

b) Same scene, but the water came from a huge tower some 100 meters away from me. I tried to escape the heavy jet of water which was emitted by the tower. The tower had a dome in the shape of half an egg. (Maybe in the age between 7 and 12)

c) I approached the tower because I was curious. The path was difficult in the reed and I was frightened because of the water jet. Prompt a huge amount of water began to fall on me. It came from big floodgates underneath the dome. I had to withdraw.

d) Same scene but this time I saw a man who looked out of a window in the tower. He had a helmet on, which looked the same as the dome of the tower. I had to withdraw the falling water.

e) The man with the egg shaped helmet came to visit our family. He gave me a present. It was a set, containing tools to play "doctor".

2. (August 27, 1986)

Together with other people we went to a river to have a bath. We had to walk far down a narrow path. At the end we had to jump carefully from slab to slab. From there, where the river bent and where the current was not too strong one could jump into the river. It was exceptionally beautiful there. The water was crystal clear between the rocks, it bubbled and formed beautiful forms made of sunlight and water. The whole scene was flooded with light, all was shimmering and shining.

3. (February 28, 1987)

I was on a ship and we played cards at a table. The cards where different than usual, although there where cards from 1 to 10 and three court cards, there where many more colours than the usual 4. The cards where given by a card juggler. Everybody got 9 cards. Then one had to bid. I had three in a row but was not sure if that was good enough. After a woman had bidden I had enough courage to bid myself. When I had to show my cards it became clear to me that I had a much better bid because I had 4 or 5 in a row. But it turned out that the card set was not complete and the game master said: "Le bateau n'est plus navigable parce que les jeux ne sont plus complètes!"

(The boat is not navigable any more because the plays are not complete any more!)

4. (June 27, 1987)

I was at a lecture which was given by Mrs. Tweedie. She looked much younger. She recommended a book by R.A. Willson. Then she showed us a succession of pictures which showed the evolution of humanity represented by one figure for each stage. I was exceptionally impressed by a figure which radiated spiritual strength and which had a wolf head. This being represented the next higher stage after the human stage. I had the impression that this picture was shown to me several times during that night but I always forgot it immediately.
